Nature is our beginning and our end. We are birthed into this world with no purpose other than survival and procreation. But although our primary purpose may seem meaningless in the grand scheme of things, nature has allowed us a wide breadth of experience and choices in between birth and death to find joy and create our own inner purpose.
We are left with only 2 truly important choices in this life.
We must choose in our minds the reason why we wish to live, and how we wish to face our inevitable deaths.
Unbound, with courage.
Or filled with fear and ignorance.
Make the right choice.
Honor is standing by the values you say you hold within your heart of hearts, even in the face of death.
Survival without honor, without meaning, is just death in disguise.
What does it mean to have purpose?
We talk of these things as though they naturally have import, but they are simply another set of ideas made up by Humans to give meaning to the drudgery of life, especially modern life.
The dreams of those who search for meaning in a life that has none except survival until our final deaths.
Should we just survive? live everyday following our base desires and needs without thought to the future and what we leave behind, releasing ourselves from the concept of responsibility for those who come after us.
Or should we aspire to make of ourselves something more, something greater, even if that concept of greatness is made up as well, does it have any less weight to it?
I wish I was the type of person to simply say yes it does and leave it at that, but unfortunately my brain refuses to let things pass so easily.
What I can say is that in my head and my heart I truly wish that all of us, from children to elderly, ascribed as much meaning as we could to each of our actions, bringing depth and wonder to everything that life has to offer, because I believe that even if it does not have some kind of spiritual meaning, it still will have a positive impact on those around us and future generations, leading to a better world for our descendants as well as all the creatures that share this beautiful planet with us.
If we cannot appreciate people leading happier lives because we did the best we could in our time, then what else is there?
It may all be made up fantasy in our heads, but at least it has some concrete positive effects, and that’s pretty much all we have.
Pure dedication to a cause. That intense, all consuming desire to stake your life on something you believe to be of the utmost importance to life.
People have found so many things to devote themselves to, whether it be a religion, family and friends, a lover, the freeing of a people from the shackles of tyranny, helping the poor and sick, the list goes on and on.
In our modern age, with people hyper distracted by 60 hour a week jobs that serve nopurpose but driving the consumerist machine, social media that has created a “like me” economy that mostly leads to depression and an insane need for people to make up fairy tale moments to share on facebook and instagram which then lead to other people hating themselves for not having the life of that person who is not even happy in the first place.
We have lost so much of what used to really drive people to feel fulfilled in life and replaced it with things that will never truly fill that hole in our spirit that searches for a cause that can give life meaning.
I wish I had some answer on how people can re-discover a purpose, but that is an individual journey that each of us must take.
The only advice I can give is that YOU are the one who needs to take that first step down the path to discovering that purpose, that meaning that we all require. Don’t wait until it is too late.
